Bornavirus in parrots
Bornavirus in parrots and parakeets leads to a condition that affects both the gastrointestinal tract and the nervous system of the birds. This disease is known as Proventricular Dilatation Disease (PDD). Its symptoms are varied and can differ depending on the area affected. The classic clinical picture of PDD includes loss of appetite, leading to weight loss, undigested food in the droppings and vomiting. Alongside these gastrointestinal symptoms, neurological signs can also occur, such as paralysis, blindness and coordination problems, caused by disturbances in the central nervous system. Birds with this condition usually die within a few months to a year after clinical signs develop.

4–5 freshly plucked breast feathers

Blood (capillary/blood paper)
For the most accurate results, we prefer to receive a combination of the three samples listed above.
Turnaround times
For PCR testing
- Turnaround time: 3–5 business days after receipt of the samples.
For ELISA testing
- Turnaround time: 10–14 business days after receipt of the samples.

Payment can be made on site*, by bank transfer or through your vet. Once payment is received, we begin the analysis.
